The engine is backed by either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox depending on the variant.
The engine is good enough to TREK a 2-ton king without much sweat on any terrains, this fact is what highlights about the engine. It’s not as though it feels choppy or immediate (as in, torquey but not linear) on 90% of the roads or on the inclines if you are driving a Fortuner. So if you are a real off roader, the 4×4 version with the electronic locking rear diff and low-range transfer case still forms a loyal foot soldier.

In line with its ladder-frame architecture realization, the suspension setup of the Fortuner is nothing to be envied; a comprehensive set up which has not only been designed for durability but also optimized towards load-bearing capability: The front uses a double-wishbone while the rear is equipped with 4-link coil spring. Toyota has also changed the suspension to improve ride comfort, most especially for broken roads but in general.
Steering is more direct at high speed than the previous model, city streets are a real challenge but the high seating intent along with camera aid make them less so. The Fortuner shimmies and lists to no real purpose like a pro.

While not fleet-like in the third row, there is space for short trips and the third-row can be folded flat to temporarily yield massive cargo volume. Roof rails and a real spare wheel also assist with its go-anywhere syle – something that many urban SUVs can only apologetically claim.
